SUMMARY
A Die Designer is an imaginative, resourceful and thorough engineer with the ability to visualize the manufacturer of a metal part using a stamping die. They are a craftsman capable of reviewing tools and die designs, determine the methods to assemble, test and debug complete tools especially stamping dies whether single hit, transfer or progressive. They are highly qualified machinists who can manually operate a multitude of manual and digital metalworking machinery to produce a part or component to a drawing AND to use this equipment to find, fix and fit the components of a stamping die so it produces the exact part required. They review the part specifications, drawings and requirements and work primarily unsupervised to complete the task and/or fabricate parts by performing the following duties:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Follows safety regulations and reports safety violations to management.
- Draws preliminary sketches of dies for review.
- Prepares strip layouts and detailed drawings making certain the design meets the customer piece part and die or machine specifications, taking into consideration how the job was quoted.
- Selects items per company standards to incorporate into the project and makes sure job materials and components are ordered in a timely manner.
- Confers with shop personnel to resolve design problems
- Checks, documents and communicate the progress of jobs as they are being built.
- Verifies the job is being built as designed and to ETM standards.
- Discusses and gives final approval or rejects changes.
- Verifies authorized changes are being built as designed and to ETM standards.
- Updates drawings to "As built".
- Orders tryout materials at appropriate time.
- Takes the Engineering lead in project tryout and resolves mechanical problems with shop and/or other personnel as necessary. Works with the customer and sales to set the agenda for the run-off.
- Gives approval for shipment once job has been given a final review.
- Furnishes to shop and sales job information and documentation pertaining to customer communications through JobBoss.
- Furnishes to shop and sales job information and documentation pertaining to job progress through JobBoss.
- Creates, compiles, catalogues, stores, retrieves and secures computer generated files.
- Assists in the training and development of design personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Training in 2D and 3D modeling software. Solidworks is the preferred development platform.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering drawings, technical procedures, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from employees, customers and managers of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with advanced mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
